The Client
When hip
hop recording artist, Fabolous, decided to upgrade the sound system
in his Range RoverŪ, he wanted to go all out. The idea was to have
high-end components and build a system that can be driven loud and
retain crystal clarity without ear-damaging distortion.
On a
visit to Audio Designs, a New York car audio shop, Fabolous inquired
about a product line that could meet his needs. He wanted something
very special. Car audio components that would meet the demand of a
serious client, something he could be proud to display, as well as
listen to. The same mainstream flavor of car audio would not satisfy
a true audiophile. Luckily a shop like Audio Designs offers more
than the usual selection when catering to high-end clientele and
only one brand of products could be considered.
In
consideration of which components from the Phass line-up would suit
the needs best .... The goal was to have sound quality above
everything else and with preferred music selections being heavy in
hip hop, a sufficient amount of bass was deeply desired. It was made
clear that Fabolous likes his music LOUD and the concern of the
common problem of distortion relative to volume was expressed.

The System

Concerns
for the system was something aesthetically pleasing without the
extra flash and glitter. Since the car was on lease it was essential
to install a system that could easily be removed without damaging
the vehicle or voiding the warranty coverage. Keeping this in mind,
the factory head unit was used to power a 3-way speaker set for the
front, 2-way speaker set for the rear passengers, and two 12"
subwoofers for the back of the truck.

The
T-Series speakers are the latest addition to the Phass line-up and a
custom T-650 3-way was installed up front, T-540 2-way for the rear,
and two SW 1216D Phass subwoofers in custom enclosures were
installed for the back. Amplification needed to be efficient and
powerful so the decision was made to bridge the new HP 4.75i four
channel amplifier to two channels, powering the T-650 3-way speakers
up front. Another HP 4.75i was bridged to power the T-540 speakers
in the rear and two HP-100 amplifiers would drive the pair of 12"
subwoofers, each of them bridged to one channel.
The Sound
To say that
the first test run of the system by Fabolous was loud enough for a
10 block radius of 10th avenue in Manhattan to hear would not be an
overstatement. The system was loud...well, ground-shaking would be a
more adequate description! The components held up very well and
crystal clear sound without distortion and crackling was played even
at the loudest volumes. While Fabolous enjoyed playing his new demos
for about an hour straight at the shop, we were happy to have
another satisfied client that can appreciate true hi-fidelity sound
in their car.
